Biography:
Former Panamanian Statesman, Nicolas Ardito-Barletta was elected President of the Republic of Panama in 1984 and resigned from office in 1985. A former senior World Bank official, Ardito-Barletta has been the General Administrator of the Inter-oceanic Regional Authority (ARI) since 1993. ARI is responsible for the Panamanian areas in the vicinity of the Panama Canal, which are now being handed back following US control. An integral part of Panama's development project, ARI hopes to attract foreign and domestic investors in an attempt to foster economic development within the formerly militarised Canal Zone.
