Biography:

A dynamic role model for African-American women, Mae Jemison was the first women of colour into space. Now serving as Professor of Environmental Science at Dartmouth and Director of The Jemison Institute, which is devoted to the application of advanced technologies in sustainable development. Dr Jemison is also the founder and President of an advanced technology company.

Before becoming an Astronaut, Jemison earned a doctorate from Cornell and served in the US Peace Corps in West Africa. Joining NASA in 1987, she was science mission specialist aboard SPACELAB J, on which she conducted experiments in materials processing and the life sciences.

Noted as a lecturer, Dr. Jemison speaks internationally on topics such as science literacy, the need for increased women and minority participation in the sciences, education, achieving excellence and sustainable development. Both for acting as a role-model for African-American women and in recognition of her contributions to science, Jemison has been the recipient of numerous honours and awards.

Jemison has advocated the benefits of space technology at the United Nations, hosted the Discovery Channel's World of Wonder, been the subject of a PBS documentary, as well as making a guest appearance on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
